Dr Karen Carroll

Dr. Karen Carroll is a Professor of Pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  She attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine and stayed on to do an internship in Primary Care Internal Medicine.  She spent the next three years in Rochester, NY in the Internal Medicine Program at the Associated Hospitals Program, University of Rochester School of Medicine, where she was also Chief resident of her program. Dr. Carroll went on to do a 2 year clinical fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and a second fellowship in Medical Microbiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine.  Over the ensuing 12 years, she became the Associate Director of the Microbiology Laboratory and later the Director of the Infectious Diseases Laboratories at the Associated Regional and University Pathologists (ARUP) Laboratories, a national reference laboratory owned by the University of Utah. She was also promoted to Associate Professor of Pathology.

In 2002, Dr. Carroll joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins as the Director of the Division of Medical Microbiology and of the fellowship training program in Medical Microbiology. She was promoted to professor of Pathology in 2006. Dr. Carroll’s focused areas of clinical research at JHU have been in the areas of epidemiology and diagnosis of healthcare associated infections especially Cdifficile infections and she has authored over 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers.

Dr. Carroll is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the College of American Pathologists. She is an active member of the American Society for Microbiology and she has served on several of its committees, as Division C Chair, and as an editor for the Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Co-Editor in Chief of the 12th edition of the Manual of Clinical Microbiology.  She is also a member of the IDWeek Program Committee and was the recipient of the IDSA 2015 Edward H. Kass named lectureship.
